Welcome Message from Pastors:
Dr. Stephen D. Jones and Kara Reagan

Second Baptist Church might not fit the stereotype of Baptists. In St. Louis, we think we are a one-of-a-kind congregation. We are Baptists, and yet we are progressive, open-minded, and inclusive. You will find in this historic congregation a feisty tenacity toward original thinking, freedom of belief, love of questions and tolerance toward everyone. A theologically progressive congregation, we seek through our worship, fellowship and service an enlightened, intelligent and spiritually liberating approach to faith.

Thus, we might not fit the stereotype of Baptists! The best way to find out more about us is to worship with us on Sunday mornings at 10:30 am. We warmly welcome visitors but we do not engage in “hard-sell” tactics. We want you to find your spiritual space and do everything we can to respect you and your spiritual needs.

If you are not ready to worship with us, go to the “worship—sermons” section of this website and listen to or read sermons that have been preached at Second Baptist Church. If these speak to you—then by all means, come and visit!

Members of Second Baptist Church of St. Louis are spiritual descendants of the first Baptist church in St. Louis founded in 1818 by pioneer missionary John Mason Peck. Rev. Peck served as interim pastor of our church on two early occasions. He pioneered a literate, ecumenical, inter-racial, and socially-engaged approach to Baptist life that members of Second Baptist Church still try to emulate. Our actual founding was on January 8, 1833 and we celebrated our 175th anniversary in 2008. (LINK: to history section) In 2002, Second Baptist Church completed the church’s beautiful campus at Clayton and McKnight Roads with the addition of a classroom and office wing.

We worship in the “Sanctuary of the Beatitudes,” named for the artistically significant glass windows designed by the acclaimed artist, Siegfried Reinhardt. You can learn more about these windows on this website: www.thebeatitudes.org/.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail either of us:
Steve@2ndbc.org or Karareagan.secondbaptist@yahoo.com.

We’d love to hear from you, or better, meet you when you come to worship. A warm and genuine welcome awaits you!

--Dr. Stephen D. Jones and Kara Reagan, Pastors
